ABOUT THE EVENT

Late November is the time for giving and gratitude, and the Mother Jones Center for Resilient Community (MoJo) is celebrating this season through its Art Auction fundraiser at the end of this month.

The MoJo Art Auction will showcase art in every form: paintings, photography, music, woodwork, art workshops, and even a gallery with art made by kids participating in Grow Ohio Valley education programs. Over 50+ pieces of art will be featured, all created by local artists and groups including Bob Villamagna, Logan Schmitt, Rosalie Haizlett, Cecy Rose, Charles Kleine, ArtWorks Around Town, the Independent Artists Group, Stifel Fine Arts Center, Grow Ohio Valley, House of Hagar, and many talented more. There will also be a variety of items from fair trade handmade baskets and earrings from Ghana and Kenya to postcards and shirts made at the MoJo. 100% of the event proceeds will be supporting the space and resources of the MoJo, but the event is more than just that - it is also appreciating and shedding light on the gem that is Wheeling’s talented and generous art community.

As a recent project of the non-profit HoH-Share, the MoJo is where the headquarters of Art Share and the Never Bored Board’s Fun-Raiser Urban Mobile Playground can be found. By providing a place, the tools, and educational opportunities for all kinds of art, creativity, and compassionate play, the MoJo seeks to inspire strength and foster healing in at-risk youth and adult populations in East Wheeling. Several works were created at the MoJo itself, an example of how this Art Share project comes back full circle.

Art viewing will be available online at the auction website and socially distanced at the MoJo beginning on Friday, 11/20 up until Sunday, 11/22. In-person viewing is spread out over three days, and masks will be required. Bidding will open the morning of Saturday, 11/21 on the auction website and close Sunday, 11/22 at 2 PM.

ABOUT THE MOJO AND HOH-SHARE INC.

The Mother Jones Center for Resilient Community (MoJo) is an art share project under HoH-Share that fosters beauty through creating art and through the relationships developed while doing community art projects with others. Amazing artistic ability is often present in urban youth, low-income, and house-less communities; however, many times there is a lack of art supplies and encouragement.

The MoJo is a community project that fosters resilience by supporting:

  • Youth leadership through beauty, creativity, and compassionate play.

  • Educational opportunities to build-up the knowledge and resources for a resilient community.

  • Local art teachers to teach free classes or share their own art in the community.

  • Faith and other groups to collect art supplies for those in need.

  • Folks to develop new friendships through creating art with our youth and at-risk populations.

  • Fostering community art projects around the neighborhood.

  • Expressing one’s soul, while also providing a medium to give voice to the voiceless.

  • A way for low or no income community members to earn pocket money, by providing a forum for their works to be sold, such as tent space at art festivals.

  • Dignity of work

  • Call to family, community, and participation

Frequently, youth and those in need of charity are undervalued for their ability to give as well. Community art projects are gifts to our neighborhoods at large and give opportunities to remember one’s inherent value. We thank you for your support in contributing to this cause!
